Why a good start matters

Most behavior problems — and most bites — trace back to gaps in those first few months.

Early training, socialization, and simple management prevent the situations that lead to bites later. A little structure now keeps your dog calmer and safer around people and other animals — and it protects you, since in Michigan a dog’s owner is responsible if their dog bites someone.

Your new-owner checklist

✓A vet visit, core vaccinations (including rabies), and a spay/neuter plan
✓An ID tag, a microchip, and a local dog license
✓Secure fencing and gates, plus a consistent leash routine
✓Early socialization and basic obedience training
✓A crate or safe space, and house rules the whole family follows
✓Confirmation that your insurance covers your dog

Set up insurance the right way

Tell your home or renter’s insurer that you have a dog, and confirm your personal liability coverage includes dog-related injuries. It’s a five-minute call that can matter enormously down the road. See our guide to homeowner’s insurance and dogs for what to ask.
